Today… we must have used the word “old” for at least a hundred times.

I seriously have not talked this much in a shoot for a long long time.
I don’t know if the previous shoot counts.
I was pretty much sleep mumbling. Lol..
But this.
This was a good chat. Lol..
Oh ya. I’ll be honest.
Initial plan for the shoot was for it to be some dark flashy concert style.
With a mic and the works. Then I realized the mistake.
We set the shoot too early. Lol!
I couldn’t drown out the outside light. -.-”
And when I did, my flash couldn’t compensate for it anymore.
Quickly changed plans. And instead, worked with whatever light I can find.

Logic though. Logic and common sense gives me an idea.

Today… I had 16 emptied batteries. None left to power my flash.
.
It’s a sad story really.
I have a habit. I keep newly charged batteries in boxes.
And used or emptied batteries out of the box.
Went to this shoot with a box full of batteries.
But the moment I start shooting, 4 just died off after another.
Switched batteries. Fires 2~3 rounds. And stops responding again.
Batteries lasted me only the first two cosplayers.
After that, I just had to shoot away.
Regardless of how the flash would sometimes fire.
Sometimes not.
And even when it did fire, it’s some half-arsed choked up sorry excuse of light.
MOOOD KILLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
Anyway.. reflecting on it later.
I’m pretty sure it’s because my batteries have been around for 3 years (rechargables)
And the fact that I’ve not used them for months. Despite being fully charged the last time I touched them.
Lesson of the day…
Charge your batteries EVEN if you have not used them since the last time you charged.
Well.. depending on how long was the last time you used them.
They say that doing that might kill your battery.
But Hey!!
I would have rather killed the batteries than to have such a big slip-up during a shoot!

Today… I bought new year clothes.
Did you guys know…
that it is exceptionally hard to shoot someone with vivid red hair.
I was looking through my photos,
wondering why my subject’s face looked sunburn,
before it hit me.
Her red wig is reflecting light!! Toning her face red!!
Well, I guess it depends on a lot of other factors as well.
Like how the wig is styled. If it covers her face or if her face is open to the surrounding light.
Or maybe if the light source from the photographer (flash/reflector/yabajaba) goes through a front fringe before hitting the subject’s face.
Etc. etc.
Here’s something for you to think about if you agree with me..
Have you ever had the same problem when shooting wigs of other colors?
Anyhowssss..
Just a short shoot before I headed off to Times Square to get myself some new clothing.
Most Chinese has this custom of wearing new clothes during Chinese New Year.
The first 2 days at least.

Today… I shot way too little people given the amount of time I had.
I was reminded that you really can’t bank on personal shoots at an event.
There are too many cosplayers, too little time.
Other things to consider at events is the fact that lightings will never be the same
as you move around the convention hall.
Maybe looking for walls to bounce off to.
But if you want the lighting you want, you can setup your own light stands and softboxes.
Even so, upon doing that, you no longer have the mobility to move around chasing cosplayers.
Unless you get someone else to look after your stuff. Lol.
You are gonna have to hope that cosplayers will come to you instead.
And even then, the cosplayers who came to you for some photos might not necessarily be er.. convincing.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that events could be the most random source of photos for one.
You might turn up with amazing photos.
You may turn up with horrible photos.
You may even lose all your photos due to memory card malfunction.

Going at 1/8000 albeit the wide aperture between f1.4 and 2.8;
The colors turn out nice and rich.
